What the task asks
Task 2 is the second of the three writing tasks. You get one prompt and write an article, a letter or a note. The official description sums it up:
« Compte rendu d’expérience ou récit, accompagné de commentaires, d’opinions ou d’arguments selon un objectif. »In practice: tell what happened, then say what you think about it, for the reader and purpose the prompt gives. Both halves count. A lively story with no opinion, or an opinion with no story, loses marks on task completion.
How it’s marked
The writing section is scored out of 20. France Éducation international doesn’t publish its detailed grid, so our corrections use four criteria built from the public CEFR descriptors:
- Task completionYou recount the experience and give opinions or arguments, for the reader and purpose the prompt sets, within 120–150 words.
- Coherence and cohesionClear paragraphs, a logical order, and linking words that show how ideas connect.
- VocabularyWords that are precise and varied enough for the topic, with correct spelling and accents.
- GrammarPast tenses for the story, agreement, and some complex sentences, with few errors.
A plan for about 20 minutes
You have 60 minutes for all three tasks and manage the time yourself. Task 2 usually deserves about 20.
- 0–3 minPlanNote the reader and the form, three moments of the story, and one opinion with two reasons.
- 3–15 minWriteA title, a paragraph that tells the story in the passé composé and imparfait, then a paragraph for your opinion.
- 15–19 minReviewCheck agreements, especially with « être », and the accents on past participles.
- 19–20 minCountStay between 120 and 150 words. An answer outside the range risks being rated « A1 non atteint ».
Sample prompt: a neighbourhood party

- Task completion · a clear account, then an opinion with two reasons and a suggestion.
- Coherence · « d’abord », « ensuite » and « cependant » guide the reader.
- Vocabulary · precise everyday words: « déposé un plat », « à l’ombre ».
- To reach NCLC 9 · vary the sentence structures and give a more nuanced view.

Questions about task 2
What if I write fewer than 120 words?
Answers outside 120–150 words risk being rated « A1 non atteint », so stay inside the range even if you run short of ideas.
Article, letter or note: does the form matter?
Yes. Follow the form in the prompt. An article can have a title; a letter needs a greeting and a sign-off suited to the reader.
